Indian Maoists derail train, one dead

Friday, 20 November 2009

Maoist extremists triggered a powerful explosion along the railway tracks on the Howrah-Mumbai main line of India’s South Eastern Railway late last night (November 19), causing the derailment of eight coaches of a passenger train.

At least one person is confirmed dead and 45 others injured in the incident, which took place a few hours ahead of a state-wide bandh (call to a standstill because of a protest) called by the Maoists in Jharkhand.

The 321 Tatanagar-Bilaspur passenger train had left Posoita station at around 9:15pm and was proceeding towards Manoharpur station in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, when the blast was triggered along the tracks. The spot where the incident happened is inside the dense Saranda Forests. The first information of the blast and derailment was reported by the guard and driver of the train. According to them, eight out of the ten coaches of the train were derailed in the blast. Three coaches were badly damaged due to the explosion.
